Assignment: Why do people believe in ghosts?

Belief in ghosts is directly related to the viel of uncertainty that surrounds the "afterlife." We want strongly to believe if life after death because without it, we often cannot find meaning in our lives. (Gerry: Have you heard Nietzsche's theory about the death of God?) Perhaps those who believe most strongly in ghosts are also the ones with the greatest fear of having "unfinished business." Perhaps they are looking for an explanation for things not yet explained by science. Perhaps they have another reason altogether. How can I know when some of them don't know themselves? (Gerry: good point)

Gerry's notes: Since you "outed" yourself as an atheist in class today, this response makes me wonder about your relationship with the paranormal. Are you one of those people desperate for a way out of the life/death cycle? Or are you resigned to your fate?
